West Bengal is a unique state having almost all types of tourism. The State is having Beach Tourism, Cultural Tourism, Eco Tourism, Wildlife Tourism and Mountain Tourism. Digha is known for beach tourism and is having beautiful sea beaches.
Brief History of Digha:
Originally Digha was a village called Beerkul and was discovered during the time of Warren Hastings in the late 18th century. In one of the letters of Warren Hastings to his wife, it was mentioned as Brighton of the East. An English Businessmen, John Frank Snaith who was attracted by its beauty started living there in 1923. He convinced West Bengal Chief Minister, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy to develop this place as a beach resort.
Location and Transport to Reach Digha:
Digha is located at a distance of about 185 km south-west of Kolkata. Nearest airport is Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, Kolkata and nearest Railway station is Digha. Digha is well connected with Kolkata by both road and rail. Tamralipta Express (12857) departs from Howrah at 6:50 Hrs and its arrival time at Digha is 10:15 Hrs. Both AC Chair car and non-AC Chair Car coaches are there in the train. Tamralipta Express (12858) departs from Digha at 10:35 Hrs. and its arrival time at Howrah is 13:55 Hrs. There are other trains but I prefer Tamralipta Express because journey is much comfortable in this train. You may also prefer road transport either by bus or by car / cab. One may book bus tickets online from the website of redbus where the information on fares of buses run by various transport operators with schedule time of departure are given.
Accommodation in Digha:
Almost all types of accomodations i.e., budget hotels to star hotels are available in Digha. There are few hotels owned by Government of West Bengal and its undertaking i.e., Saikatabas, Dighali Tourism Property, Digha Tourist Lodge, Oceana Tourist Complex, Digha Holiday Home (Abasarika). There are some star hotels like Dolphin, Hotel Seagull, Rupasi Bangla, Hotel Sea Hawk, etc. There are some hotels in Digha near sea beach, i.e., Saikatabas, Hotel Sea Hawk, Hotel Seagull. Hotel Le ROi is near Digha Railway station.
Local Transports available in Digha:
Local transports available in Digha are Toto (e-vehicle), Auto-Rickshaw and Tourist Car. One need to bargain while hiring any vehicle.
Places of Interests in Digha:
Sea beaches in Digha are famous for its wideness and is having one of the widest beaches in the world. Sea beaches in both New and Old Digha are attractive. There is a metalled road parallel to sea beach from New Digha to Mohana. Sea beach in Digha is very neat and clean because of prohibition of use of polythene bag in Digha.
The picture in the left shows the wide and clean sea beach in Old Digha on the way to Mohana. You may see the seating arrangements on the embankment of sea beach where tourists can seat and enjoy sea waves. This sea beach is extended up to Mohana. Both sunrise and sunset are enjoyable in the sea beach of Digha. Sea beaches in both Old and New Digha are having tourist attractions. New Digha is at a distance of about 2 Km from Old Digha. Shared Autos are available to commute between Old and New Digha.
Sea beach sites of both Old and New Digha are attractive. One can take bath in sea beaches of both Old and New Digha during the morning hours provided sea is not turbulent. Evening and Night are also enjoyable in the sea beaches of both Old and New Digha. You can also enjoy horse riding and boat riding in sea beach during evening hours.

You can see tourists enjoying in the sea beach of Digha. Night is beautiful near sea beaches of both Old and New Digha. You will find many stalls near sea beach selling food items, bags, garments, articles made from conch, etc. Roads and streets near sea beaches are well decorated with light. You may find lighting decoration near sea beach. You can enjoy eating sea foods in sea beach. Prawn fry (Chingri Bhaja) is famous and delicious seafood.

Amarabati Park is another tourist attraction place which is at 5 minutes walking distance from New Digha sea beach. There is an entry fee of тВ╣10 per person for entering inside the park. However, there is no entry fee for the children below the age of 3 years. The park is open from 7.30 am to 5.30 pm. It is better to visit this park during winter season i.e., from October to February. You will have pleasant weather during this period. It is better to avoid visiting this place during summer and monsoon season. There is a beautiful lake in the middle of the park with boating facility. There is a paved walkway surrounding the lake. There is a ropeway inside the park for which one has to buy ticket separately. One has to buy separate ticket for boating in the lake. You will find varieties of plants, birds and animals inside the park. There is a play area for children.
Marine Aquarium of Zoological Survey of India is another tourist attraction in Digha. It is a Marine Aquarium cum Regional Centre (MARC) and has the largest inbuilt aquarium in India. You will find the following three kinds of creatures in the aquarium.
(i) Species of Conservative Importance
(ii) Local and Curious Species
(iii) Freshwater Species
MARC, Digha is one of the 16th Regional Centres of Zoological Survey of India under Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India. It was established in 1989 and is having two distinct wings i.e., Research Centre and Aquarium. Aquarium was opened to the public on February 04, 2003. Research Centre provides facilities to all accredited researchers working in the field of various aspects of coastal marine ecosystem. The information on various aspects of coastal and marine biodiversity are available with the Centre. The aquarium consists of 24 large aquarium tanks exhibiting various marine species including horse-shoe crabs, sea anemones, lobsters, starfishes, sharks, etc. For more information, one can visit the official website of Zoological Survey of India, Government of India.
Other Places of Interests near Digha:
In addition to the above-mentioned places of interest in Digha, there are some other tourist attraction places near Digha. Chandaneswar Shiv Temple, Mandarmani Beach, Shankarpur Beach and Udaipur Beach are tourist attraction places near Digha. Mandarmani Beach is famous for water sport activities. Digha-Mandarmani Beach festival is celebrated in the month of January every year.
It is not possible to cover all the places in Digha and surrounding areas in 2-3 days short tour. It is better to cover beaches and other places in New and Old Digha in one tour for 3-4 days so that you can enjoy sightseeing with rest and leisure. Mandarmani beach, Shankarpur beach, Chandaneswar Shiv Temple, Udaipur beach, etc., may be covered in another tour for 3-4 days with stay in Mandarmani. There are good hotels in Mandarmani near sea beach. If you are staying in far off place then it is advisable to spend at least 6-7 days in Digha and Mandarmani to cover maximum places in and around Digha and Mandarmani. It is better to travel to these places during winter season.
